In Ephesians 5:22-24; 33b, Paul commands wives to be subject to their own husbands and he presents three important concepts we must understand concerning this subjection.

  1. The manner in which she is to be subject to her husband is “as to the Lord.” (v. 22).
  2. The explanation of why she is to be subject to her husband is “the husband is head of the wife as Christ also is the head of the church” (v. 23).
  3. The model she is to use for being subject to her husband is “the church being subject to Christ” (v. 24).

In Ephesians 4:17-24 Paul illuminates the radical differences between those who are saved and those who are not by contrasting the characteristics of the non-believer’s walk with those of the believer’s walk.

  1. The walk of the non-believer is marked by three characteristics:
    1. Intellectual futility (vv. 17-18a).

      1. Because of their ignorance (v. 18b).
      2. Because of their hard hearts (v 18c).

    3. Godly character.

    2. These gifts are according to the measure of Christ’s gift (v. 7b).
  2. Gifts are given by Christ.
    1. At His victorious ascension (v. 8).
