Pastor Rob Davis: 1 Thess. 4:9-12

In 1 Thessalonians 4:9-12, Paul urges believers to develop four habits that will enable their lives to be a proper witness to non-believers (v. 12).

Believers should develop the habit of:

  1. Increasing in love for the brethren.
    1. A love that is taught by God (v. 9).
    2. A love that is practiced widely (v. 10).
  2. Leading a quiet life (v. 11a).
  3. Minding their own business (v. 11b).
  4. Working for an honest wage (v. 11c).

Pastor Rob Davis: 1 Thess. 4:1-8

In 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8 Paul gives us as believers 6 reasons why our walk must be free from sexual immorality.

A Christian’s walk must be free from sexual immorality because:

  1. It is commanded by Jesus (vv. 1a, 2).
  2. It pleases God (v. 1b).
  3. It is God’s will (v. 3).
  4. It glorifies God.
    1. Individually (vv. 4-5)
    2. Corporately (v. 6a)
  5. It avoids God’s judgment (v. 6b).
  6. It is the nature of God’s call (vv. 7-8).

In 1 Thessalonians 3:9-13 we see 5 characteristics of Paul’s prayer life.

  1. Paul prays with thanksgiving (v. 9a).
  2. Paul prays with joy (v. 9b).
  3. Paul prays for others (v. 9c).
  4. Paul prays fervently (v. 10a).
  5. Paul prays with petitions.
    1. May I see you (v. 10b).
    2. May I continue to disciple you (v. 10b).
    3. May God clear my path to you (v. 11).
    4. May God cause your love to grow.
      1. For believers (v. 12a).
      2. For non-believers (v. 12b).
      3. Like ours does for you (v. 12c).
    5. May God establish you.
      1. Blameless (v. 13a).
      2. In holiness (v. 13b).
      3. Before God (v. 13c).
      4. At Christ’s coming (v. 13d).
