In 1 Thessalonians 5:23-28 Paul closes the letter with 7 appeals to both God and the congregation.

  1. Paul appeals to God in prayer for Him to sanctify believers entirely at Christ’s coming (v. 23a).
  2. Paul appeals to God in prayer for Him to preserve believers.
    1. Completely (v. 23b).
    2. Without Blame (v. 23c).
  3. Paul appeals to the congregation for them to trust in God’s faithfulness (v. 24).
  4. Paul appeals to the congregation for prayer on his behalf (v. 25).
  5. Paul appeals to the congregation for them to greet each other on his behalf (v. 26).
  6. Paul appeals to the congregation for this letter to be read to the body (v. 27).
  7. Paul appeals to Jesus for His grace to be upon the congregation (v. 28).

In 1 Thessalonians 5:19-22 Paul presents 5 exhortations that will lead to peace in our worship, both public and private.

  1. Don’t quench the Spirit (v. 19).
  2. Don’t despise prophecies (v. 20).
  3. Do examine every prophecy (v. 21a).
  4. Do hold fast to those prophecies that are found to be true (v. 21b).
  5. Do abstain from those prophecies that are found to be false (v. 22).

In 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 Paul present three actions/attitudes that carry out God’s will and lead to peace.

  1. Rejoice always (v. 16).
  2. Pray always (v. 17).
  3. Give thanks in every situation (v. 18).

In 1 Thessalonians 5:14-15 Paul continues his exhortations on Christian conduct by commanding 4 relationship principles that will lead to peace in the congregation.

  1. Instruct and warn those who are unruly (v. 14a).
  2. Encourage those who are fainthearted (v. 14b).
  3. Help those who are spiritually weak (v. 14c).
  4. Be patient with everyone (v. 14d).
    1. By putting off revenge (v. 15a).
    2. By putting on love (v. 15b).
