Pastor Rob Davis: Matt. 2:1-12

In Matthew 2:1-12 we observe 3 responses to God’s revelation.

  1. The magi respond with faith and worship.
    1. They came from the east (v. 1).
    2. They inquired about His whereabouts (v. 2).
    3. They responded to God’s word (v. 9-10).
    4. They worshiped the Messiah (v. 11).
    5. They changed their “way” (v. 12).
  2. King Herod responds with rebellion and self-exaltation.
    1. He was troubled by the reports (v. 3).
    2. He inquired about the place of the Messiah’s birth (with wrong motive) (v. 4).
    3. He inquired about the time of the Messiah’s birth (with wrong motive) (v. 7).
    4. He sought to locate the Messiah (with wrong motive) (v. 8).
  3. The chief priests and scribes respond with apathy and blindness.
    1. They consulted Scripture
      (but refused to understand) (v. 5).
    2. They preached Scripture
      (but refused to obey) (v. 6).


December 24, 2006: Matt. 1:18-23

In Matthew 1:18-23 we are shown 3 actions surrounding the conception and birth of Christ.

  1. Joseph acted in righteousness.
    1. By caring for Mary (vs. 18-19a).
    2. By obeying the law (v. 19b).
  2. God acted in sovereignty.
    1. By sending an angel with a message.
      1. Don’t be afraid (20a).
      2. The Child is of the Holy Spirit (v. 20b).
      3. Name Him Jesus (v. 21).
    2. By fulfilling His promise (vs. 22-23).
  3. Joseph acted in obedience.
    1. By taking Mary as his wife (v. 24).
    2. By naming the Child Jesus (v. 25).

In Matthew 1:1-17 we find three sets of 14 generations that make up the genealogy of Christ. Within these three sets of generations we find

  1. The first set of 14 generations— Abraham to David: Jesus is the Son of Abraham (1:1-6).
    1. God’s mercy is revealed
    2. God’s sovereignty is revealed
  2. The second set of 14 generations—David to the deportation: Jesus is the Son of David (1:6-11).
    1. God’s righteousness is revealed
    2. God’s justice is revealed
  3. The third set of 14 generations—The deportation to Jesus: Jesus is the Messiah (1:12-17).
    1. God’s faithfulness is revealed
    2. God’s covenant faithfulness (chesed) is revealed

In Jonah 4:1-11 we are shown 3 questions through which our loving and sovereign God teaches our puny and pouting prophet.

  1. Angry Jonah is questioned by our longsuffering God.
    1. Jonah’s anger revealed (v. 1)
    2. God’s character revealed (v. 2)
    3. Jonah’s silly statement (v. 3)
    4. God’s longsuffering question (v. 4)
  2. Pouting Jonah is questioned by our sovereign God.
    1. Jonah throws a fit (v. 5)
    2. God sovereignly provides (v. 6-8a)
    3. Jonah’s silly statement #2 (v. 8b)
    4. God’s sovereign question (v. 9a)
    5. Jonah’s wrong answer (v. 9b)
  3. Insolent Jonah is questioned by our compassionate God.
    1. Jonah is rebuked (v. 10)
    2. God’s compassionate question (v. 11).

In Jonah 2:10-3:10 we are shown 5 responses of obedience.

  1. The fish responds in obedience to God (2:10).
  2. Jonah responds in obedience to God.
    1. Jonah proceeds to Nineveh (3:1-3).
    2. Jonah preaches to Nineveh (3:4).
  3. The Ninevites respond in obedience to God.
    1. Internally with belief (3:5a)
    2. Externally with fasting & mourning (3:5b)
  4. The king responds in obedience to God.
    1. With a proper attitude: Humility (3:6)
    2. With a proper action: A proclamation
      1. Man & beast must fast & mourn (3:7)
      2. Man must call on God (3:8b)
      3. Man must hope in God (3:9)
  5. God responds in obedience to His own character.
    1. Man repented (v. 10a)
    2. So God relented (v. 10b)
