In Matthew 2:1-12 we observe 3 responses to God’s revelation.
- The magi respond with faith and worship.
- They came from the east (v. 1).
- They inquired about His whereabouts (v. 2).
- They responded to God’s word (v. 9-10).
- They worshiped the Messiah (v. 11).
- They changed their “way” (v. 12).
- King Herod responds with rebellion and self-exaltation.
- He was troubled by the reports (v. 3).
- He inquired about the place of the Messiah’s birth (with wrong motive) (v. 4).
- He inquired about the time of the Messiah’s birth (with wrong motive) (v. 7).
- He sought to locate the Messiah (with wrong motive) (v. 8).
- The chief priests and scribes respond with apathy and blindness.
- They consulted Scripture
(but refused to understand) (v. 5).
- They preached Scripture
(but refused to obey) (v. 6).

In Matthew 1:18-23 we are shown 3 actions surrounding the conception and birth of Christ.
- Joseph acted in righteousness.
- By caring for Mary (vs. 18-19a).
- By obeying the law (v. 19b).
- God acted in sovereignty.
- By sending an angel with a message.
- Don’t be afraid (20a).
- The Child is of the Holy Spirit (v. 20b).
- Name Him Jesus (v. 21).
- By fulfilling His promise (vs. 22-23).
- Joseph acted in obedience.
- By taking Mary as his wife (v. 24).
- By naming the Child Jesus (v. 25).

In Matthew 1:1-17 we find three sets of 14 generations that make up the genealogy of Christ. Within these three sets of generations we find
- The first set of 14 generations— Abraham to David: Jesus is the Son of Abraham (1:1-6).
- God’s mercy is revealed
- God’s sovereignty is revealed
- The second set of 14 generations—David to the deportation: Jesus is the Son of David (1:6-11).
- God’s righteousness is revealed
- God’s justice is revealed
- The third set of 14 generations—The deportation to Jesus: Jesus is the Messiah (1:12-17).
- God’s faithfulness is revealed
- God’s covenant faithfulness (chesed) is revealed

In Jonah 4:1-11 we are shown 3 questions through which our loving and sovereign God teaches our puny and pouting prophet.
- Angry Jonah is questioned by our longsuffering God.

- Jonah’s silly statement (v. 3)
- God’s longsuffering question (v. 4)
- Pouting Jonah is questioned by our sovereign God.
- Jonah throws a fit (v. 5)
- God sovereignly provides (v. 6-8a)
- Jonah’s silly statement #2 (v. 8b)
- God’s sovereign question (v. 9a)
- Jonah’s wrong answer (v. 9b)
- Insolent Jonah is questioned by our compassionate God.
- Jonah is rebuked (v. 10)
- God’s compassionate question (v. 11).

In Jonah 2:10-3:10 we are shown 5 responses of obedience.
- The fish responds in obedience to God (2:10).
- Jonah responds in obedience to God.
- Jonah proceeds to Nineveh (3:1-3).
- Jonah preaches to Nineveh (3:4).
- The Ninevites respond in obedience to God.
- Internally with belief (3:5a)
- Externally with fasting & mourning (3:5b)
- The king responds in obedience to God.
- With a proper attitude: Humility (3:6)
- With a proper action: A proclamation
- Man & beast must fast & mourn (3:7)
- Man must call on God (3:8b)
- Man must hope in God (3:9)
- God responds in obedience to His own character.
- Man repented (v. 10a)
- So God relented (v. 10b)
