In Matthew 4:1-11 we are shown Jesus being approved as the faithful Son of God as He remains faithful in the face of 3 satanic temptations to avoid the cross.

  1. Jesus is tempted to avoid the cross by disobeying the word of God but He remains faithful to God’s word (vs. 1-4).
  2. Jesus is tempted to avoid the cross by subverting the plan of God but He remains faithful to God’s plan (vs. 5-7).
  3. Jesus is tempted to avoid the cross by worshiping the enemy of God but He remains faithful to worship God (vs. 8-11).

In Matthew 3:13-17 we observe the Trinity at work in John’s baptism of Jesus.

  1. God the Son, Jesus, the 2nd Person of the Trinity, was at work.
    1. He came (v. 13)
    2. He explained (v. 14, 15)
  2. God the Holy Spirit, the 3rd Person of the Trinity, was at work.
    1. Confirming Scripture (v. 16)
    2. Anointing Jesus (v. 16)
  3. God the Father, the 1st Person of the Trinity, was at work.
    1. Identifying Jesus as God (v. 17a)
    2. Showing pleasure with Jesus (v. 17b)

    1. Condemnation (v. 7)
    2. Confrontation (vs. 8-10)
    3. Confirmation (vs. 11-12)

In Matthew 2:13-23 we are shown God’s sovereign control of history as 3 prophecies concerning Christ are fulfilled.

  1. Joseph obeys and takes Jesus to Egypt so Hosea 11:1 would be fulfilled.
    1. An angel appears with a command (v. 13).
    2. Joseph obeys (v. 14).
    3. Prophesy fulfilled (v. 15).
  2. Herod continues to rebel and tries to kill Jesus so Jeremiah 31:15 would be fulfilled.
    1. Herod becomes angry (v. 16a).
    2. Herod orders the death of children (v. 16b).
    3. Prophesy fulfilled (vs. 17-18).
  3. Joseph obeys and takes Jesus to Nazareth so the prophets would be fulfilled.
    1. An angel appears with a command (vs. 19-20).
    2. Joseph obeys (vs. 21-23a).
    3. Prophesy fulfilled (v. 23b).
