In Matthew 5:13 Jesus continues with His Sermon on the Mount by making the first of 2 statements about the believer’s influence on the world.

  1. You are the salt of the earth.
    1. It is you, and no one else (v. 13a)!
    2. You must not lose your influence.
      1. Because you will become foolish (v. 13b).
      2. Because you will be useless in the kingdom (v. 13c).

In Matthew 5:10-12 we find Jesus presenting the 8th and final beatitude and showing us 2 more characteristics of the blessed one.

  1. The blessed one will be persecuted.
    1. For righteousness sake (v. 10a)
    2. Because of Christ
      1. with insults (v. 11a)
      2. with harassment (v. 11b)
      3. with slander (v. 11c)
    3. Like the prophets of old (12c)
  2. The blessed one will receive the kingdom of heaven.
    1. As a great reward (v. 10b, 12 b)
    2. Resulting in exceeding gladness (v. 12a)

In Matthew 5:9 we find Jesus presenting the 7th beatitude and showing us 2 more characteristics of the blessed one.

  1. The blessed one will be a peacemaker.
    1. One whose God is peace.
    2. One whose Christ has provided peace.
    3. One who has been granted peace.
    4. One who pursues peace.
      1. In their home.
      2. In their church.
      3. In their world.
  2. The blessed one will be called a son of God.
    1. Because this is who they are.
    2. Because others will recognize this.

In Matthew 28:1-10 we observe 7 emotions exhibited as a result of the empty tomb.

  1. The women came in sorrow (v. 1).
  2. The angel came in power & glory (vs. 2-3).
  3. The guards shook with fear (v. 4).
  4. The angel announced in triumph (vs. 5-7).
  5. The women left with fear & great joy (v. 8).
  6. The women stopped to worship (v. 9).
  7. Jesus spoke with comfort (v. 10).

In Matthew 27:27-56 we are shown seven reactions to the crucifixion of our Lord.

  1. The soldiers react with ignorance (vs. 27-37).
  2. The robbers react with insolence (vs. 38; 44).
  3. The passers-by react with blindness (vs. 39-40; 47-49).
  4. The religious leaders act with arrogance (vs. 41-43).
  5. The centurion & guards act with humility (v. 54).
  6. The women react with faithfulness (vs.55-56).
  7. God reacts with holiness (vs. 45-46; 50-53).
