Pastor Rob Davis: Matt. 5:21-26

In Matthew 5:21-26 Jesus begins to challenge the external righteousness taught by the Pharisees by teaching 3 truths about the 6th commandment.

  1. The original command is watered down (v. 21).
  2. The original command is explained.
    1. Not only the external act of murder merits judgment, but also its heart prerequisite: anger (v. 22a).
    2. Not only the external act of murder merits judgment, but also its heart prerequisite: insulting words (v. 22b).
    3. Not only the external act of murder merits judgment, but also its heart prerequisite: slanderous words (v. 22c).
  3. The original command is applied.
    1. Reconcile before you worship (vs. 23-24).
    2. Reconcile before you face judgment (vs. 25, 26).

Pastor Rob Davis: Matt. 5:19,20

In Matthew 5:17-20 Jesus lays the foundation for His teaching on true righteousness by making 3 statements concerning the Old Testament.

  1. The Old Testament stands
    1. Because Christ did not come to destroy the law (v. 17a).
    2. Because God authored the law (v. 17b).
    3. Because Christ fulfills the law (v. 17c).
    4. Because the law is permanent (v. 18).
  2. The Old Testament must be taught and obeyed.
    1. Those who are least in the kingdom of heaven:
      1. Set aside the Old Testament (v. 19a).
      2. Teach others to do the same (v. 19b).
    2. Those who are greatest in the kingdom of heaven:
      1. Obey the Old Testament (v. 19c).
      2. Teach other to do the same (v. 19d).
  3. The Old Testament reveals kingdom standards for righteousness.
    1. Greater than the Pharisees’ (v. 20a).
    2. Required for entrance to heaven (v. 20b).

Pastor Rob Davis: Matt. 5:14-16

In Matthew 5:14-16 Jesus continues with His Sermon on the Mount by making the second of 2 statements about the believer’s influence on the world.

  1. You are the salt of the earth.
    1. It is you, and no one else (v. 13a)!
    2. You must not lose your influence.
      1. Because you will become foolish (v. 13b).
      2. Because you will be useless in the kingdom (v. 13c).
  2. You are the light of the world.
    1. Being light is not an option (v. 14).
    2. Being light is your purpose (v. 15).
    3. Being light is effective.
      1. The lost will see the Light (v. 16a).
      2. The lost will glorify God (v. 16b).
