20 05 2007Pastor Rob Davis: Matt. 5:19,20
In Matthew 5:17-20 Jesus lays the foundation for His teaching on true righteousness by making 3 statements concerning the Old Testament.
- The Old Testament stands
- Because Christ did not come to destroy the law (v. 17a).
- Because God authored the law (v. 17b).
- Because Christ fulfills the law (v. 17c).
- Because the law is permanent (v. 18).
- The Old Testament must be taught and obeyed.
- Those who are least in the kingdom of heaven:
- Set aside the Old Testament (v. 19a).
- Teach others to do the same (v. 19b).
- Those who are greatest in the kingdom of heaven:
- Obey the Old Testament (v. 19c).
- Teach other to do the same (v. 19d).
- The Old Testament reveals kingdom standards for righteousness.
- Greater than the Pharisees’ (v. 20a).
- Required for entrance to heaven (v. 20b).
