Pastor Rob Davis: Ephesians 1:15-23
In Ephesians 1:15-23 Paul offers two types of prayers for the Ephesians and for all believers:
- Paul offers a prayer of thanksgiving.
- For their faith (v. 15)
- For their love (v. 15)
- Paul offers a prayer of intercession.
- Paul prays that God may grant the Ephesians wisdom and revelation of Jesus through the Holy Spirit (v. 17).
- Paul prays that since the eyes of their hearts have been enlightened:
- They will understand the hope of His calling (v. 18a).
- They will understand the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints (v. 18b).
- They will understand the surpassing greatness of God’s power toward us who believe (v. 19) as shown through:
- The resurrection of Christ (v. 20a).
- The exaltation of Christ (v. 20b-21).
- The authority of Christ (v. 22a).
- The headship of Christ (v. 22b-23).

In Ephesians 6:10-24 Paul closes this magnificent letter with 6 specifics concerning the believer’s spiritual battle.
- The resource for the battle is God’s might.
- Be strong from a position of strength (v. 10a).
- Be strong in the source of strength (v. 10b).
- The apparel for the battle is God’s armor (v. 11a).
- Loins girded with truth (v. 14a)
- Breastplate of righteousness (v. 14b)
- Feet shod with the preparation of the Gospel of peace (v. 15)
- Shield of faith (v. 16)
- Helmet of salvation (v. 17a)
- Sword of the Spirit (v. 17b)
- The purpose of the battle is to resist Satan’s schemes (v. 11b).
- The opponents in the battle are Satan and His agents (v. 12).
- The result of the battle is victory.
- Resisting (v. 13a, b)
- Standing firm (v. 13c, d)
- The front line offensive in the battle is prayer.
- Prayer which is to be all-encompassing.
- All types (v. 18a)
- All times (v. 18b)
- With all tenacity (v. 18c)
- For all believers (v. 18d)
- Prayer which is to be specific (v. 19-20).
- Prayer which may be answered through you (v. 21-22).
- Paul prays for the Ephesians (v. 23-24).
