In Ephesians 1:15-23 Paul offers two types of prayers for the Ephesians and for all believers:

  1. Paul offers a prayer of thanksgiving.
    1. For their faith (v. 15)
    2. For their love (v. 15)
  2. Paul offers a prayer of intercession.
    1. Paul prays that God may grant the Ephesians wisdom and revelation of Jesus through the Holy Spirit (v. 17).
    2. Paul prays that since the eyes of their hearts have been enlightened:
      1. They will understand the hope of His calling (v. 18a).
      2. They will understand the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints (v. 18b).
      3. They will understand the surpassing greatness of God’s power toward us who believe (v. 19) as shown through:
        1. The resurrection of Christ (v. 20a).
        2. The exaltation of Christ (v. 20b-21).
        3. The authority of Christ (v. 22a).
        4. The headship of Christ (v. 22b-23).

In Ephesians 6:10-24 Paul closes this magnificent letter with 6 specifics concerning the believer’s spiritual battle.

  1. The resource for the battle is God’s might.
    1. Be strong from a position of strength (v. 10a).
    2. Be strong in the source of strength (v. 10b).
  2. The apparel for the battle is God’s armor (v. 11a).
    1. Loins girded with truth (v. 14a)
    2. Breastplate of righteousness (v. 14b)
    3. Feet shod with the preparation of the Gospel of peace (v. 15)
    4. Shield of faith (v. 16)
    5. Helmet of salvation (v. 17a)
    6. Sword of the Spirit (v. 17b)
  3. The purpose of the battle is to resist Satan’s schemes (v. 11b).
  4. The opponents in the battle are Satan and His agents (v. 12).
  5. The result of the battle is victory.
    1. Resisting (v. 13a, b)
    2. Standing firm (v. 13c, d)
  6. The front line offensive in the battle is prayer.
    1. Prayer which is to be all-encompassing.
      1. All types (v. 18a)
      2. All times (v. 18b)
      3. With all tenacity (v. 18c)
      4. For all believers (v. 18d)
    2. Prayer which is to be specific (v. 19-20).
    3. Prayer which may be answered through you (v. 21-22).
    4. Paul prays for the Ephesians (v. 23-24).
