July 15, 2007: The Self-Deception of Idolaters

Charles Sebold: The Self-Deception of Idolaters (Ex. 32:1-6)

In Exodus 32:1-6 we learn that we must live up to God’s expectations, not make a god who matches ours.

  1. Idolaters know who God’s servant is, that they are rejecting (v. 1)
  2. Idolaters ascribe the works of God to their idols (v. 4) (”this is your god who brought you out of the land of Egypt”)
  3. Idolaters claim that the idol is the One True God (v. 5) (”tomorrow shall be a feast to Yahweh”)
  4. Idolaters pervert God’s worship (v. 5, 6)
  5. Idolaters use the worship of God as a pretext for their own personal sin (v. 6)
  6. Christ is the response
    1. Recognize that He is the fulfillment of the promises, the image of God
    2. Ascribe the works of God to Him
    3. Know that we add nothing to Him, but we rely on Him for everything
    4. Worship Him in spirit and truth, the way that He intended
    5. Holiness and brokenness is what He expects
