July 15, 2007: The Self-Deception of Idolaters
July 15, 2007Charles Sebold: The Self-Deception of Idolaters (Ex. 32:1-6)
In Exodus 32:1-6 we learn that we must live up to God’s expectations, not make a god who matches ours.
- Idolaters know who God’s servant is, that they are rejecting (v. 1)
- Idolaters ascribe the works of God to their idols (v. 4) (“this is your god who brought you out of the land of Egypt”)
- Idolaters claim that the idol is the One True God (v. 5) (“tomorrow shall be a feast to Yahweh”)
- Idolaters pervert God’s worship (v. 5, 6)
- Idolaters use the worship of God as a pretext for their own personal sin (v. 6)
- Christ is the response
- Recognize that He is the fulfillment of the promises, the image of God
- Ascribe the works of God to Him
- Know that we add nothing to Him, but we rely on Him for everything
- Worship Him in spirit and truth, the way that He intended
- Holiness and brokenness is what He expects
