    2. To God’s will.
      1. In heaven (v. 10d).
      2. On earth (v. 10c).

Pastor Rob Davis: Matt. 6:1-8, 6-18

In Matthew 6:1-8; 16-18 Jesus warns us not to be hypocrites (that is, outwardly worshiping God while inwardly having wrong motives) by giving three examples of how to worship God and be seen & rewarded by God rather then be seen and honored by men:

  1. When you give, do not give with a fanfare, seeking the honor of men, but rather give in secret (vs. 1-4).
  2. When you pray, do not pray with many words and in order to be seen by men, but rather pray in secret (vs. 5-8).
  3. When you fast, do not neglect your appearance, so as to be noticed by men, but rather fast in secret (vs. 16-18).

Pastor Rob Davis: Matt. 5:43-48

In Matthew 5:43-48 Jesus continues to challenge the external righteousness of the Pharisees by teaching three truths about our relationship with our adversaries.

  1. The original command is changed (v. 43).
  2. The original command is explained.
    1. Love your enemies (v. 44a).
    2. Pray for your persecutors (v. 44b).
  3. The original command applied.
    1. By living this way you will prove yourselves to be true sons of our loving and merciful Father (v. 45).
    2. By living this way you will exceed the love shown by other men and show others the love of your Father (v. 46-47).
    3. By living this way you will be more like your heavenly Father, Who is perfect (v. 48).
