Charles Sebold: Spirit and Scripture

  1. God can only be known by His revelation of Himself
    1. General revelation (generally revealed to all men)
      Ps. 19:1-6; Rom. 1:18-23
    2. Special revelation (revealed as a special act to believers alone)
      Ps. 19:7-14; Rom. 1:1-5; Acts 10:42,43; Rom. 1:16,17
  2. God’s revelation is only about Christ
    1. The Old Testament centered on Him
      Acts 10:42; John 5:39,40
    2. The New Testament completes the revelation about Him
      Heb. 1:2; Acts 10:42
    3. The spirit of prophecy is the testimony of Jesus
      Rev. 19:10
  3. God speaks to us today through His Spirit
    1. The Spirit works to bear witness of the Son
      John 15:26, 1 John 5:6
    2. The Spirit glorifies the Son in the persecution of the saints
      Matt. 10:20
    3. The Spirit delivered “the words of God” and “all the truth” and “commands” to the apostles and prophets
      John 3:34, 16:13; Acts 1:2
    4. The Spirit gives new life through the words of Christ
      John 6:63
    5. The Spirit teaches and brings to remembrance what Christ says
      John 14:26, 1 Cor. 2:12,13
    6. The Spirit fills people at times to empower them to accomplish great things for the kingdom of God
      Acts 4:8,31
    7. The Spirit encourages the churches through Christ’s words
      Rev. 2:7
  4. How do we replace the Spirit?
    Col. 2:16-19
    1. By listening and keeping the traditions of men
      Mark 7:6-8
    2. By believing that our heart’s voice is the same as God’s still, small voice
      Jer. 17:9, 23:25-32; Col. 2:18,19
    3. By trusting in the works of the law rather than the promise of Christ in the Word
      Gal. 3:2-6
  5. What must we do to walk in the Spirit?
    Gal. 5:25
    1. We must apply ourselves to the study of the Word on a daily basis, to gather the raw materials which the Spirit will apply to our lives
      Col. 3:16,17
    2. As we learn what the Word requires of us, we must not grieve the Spirit by failing to speak or act according to His Word
      Eph. 4:25-32
    3. We must earnestly desire prophecy—that is, the testimony of Jesus
      1 Cor. 14:1-5,39
    4. The test: if the Spirit bears witness to Christ, then we who claim to be filled with the Spirit must also bear witness to Christ, by word and deed

Pastor Rob Davis: Matt. 6:25-34

In Matthew 6:25-34 Jesus presents us with two commands concerning anxiety that will keep us single-minded in our devotion to Him.

  1. The negative command: Do not worry about your life.
    1. As to what you will eat or drink (v. 25a, b, d; 26; 31a, b)
    2. As to what you will wear (v. 25c, d; 28-30; 31c)
    3. As to how long you will live (v. 27).
  2. The positive command: Trust God with your life.
    1. He already knows what you need (v. 32).
    2. Seek to be obedient to His kingdom (v. 33a).
    3. Seek to grow in His righteousness (v. 33b).
    4. Trust in God’s daily provision without worrying about tomorrow (v. 34).

Pastor Rob Davis: Matt. 6:19-24

In Matthew 6:19-24 Jesus says that we must have a single-minded devotion to Him in three areas.

We must be single-minded in our devotion to Him with regard to our:

  1. Wealth.
    1. Don’t treasure up earthly treasures.
      1. Moths will destroy them (v.19a).
      2. Rust will destroy them (v. 19b).
      3. Thieves will steal them (v. 19c).
    2. Do treasure up heavenly treasures.
      1. Moths will not destroy them (v. 20a).
      2. Rust will not destroy them (v. 20b).
      3. Thieves will not steal them (v. 20c).
    3. What you treasure reveals your heart (v. 21)
  2. Wisdom.
    1. A clean heart results in spiritual understanding (v. 22).
    2. An evil heart results in earthly understanding (v. 23).
  3. Work.
