Charles Sebold: Spirit and Scripture

  1. God can only be known by His revelation of Himself
    1. General revelation (generally revealed to all men)
      Ps. 19:1-6; Rom. 1:18-23
    2. Special revelation (revealed as a special act to believers alone)
      Ps. 19:7-14; Rom. 1:1-5; Acts 10:42,43; Rom. 1:16,17
  2. God’s revelation is only about Christ
    1. The Old Testament centered on Him
      Acts 10:42; John 5:39,40
    2. The New Testament completes the revelation about Him
      Heb. 1:2; Acts 10:42
    3. The spirit of prophecy is the testimony of Jesus
      Rev. 19:10
  3. God speaks to us today through His Spirit
    1. The Spirit works to bear witness of the Son
      John 15:26, 1 John 5:6
    2. The Spirit glorifies the Son in the persecution of the saints
      Matt. 10:20
    3. The Spirit delivered “the words of God” and “all the truth” and “commands” to the apostles and prophets
      John 3:34, 16:13; Acts 1:2
    4. The Spirit gives new life through the words of Christ
      John 6:63
    5. The Spirit teaches and brings to remembrance what Christ says
      John 14:26, 1 Cor. 2:12,13
    6. The Spirit fills people at times to empower them to accomplish great things for the kingdom of God
      Acts 4:8,31
    7. The Spirit encourages the churches through Christ’s words
      Rev. 2:7
  4. How do we replace the Spirit?
    Col. 2:16-19
    1. By listening and keeping the traditions of men
      Mark 7:6-8
    2. By believing that our heart’s voice is the same as God’s still, small voice
      Jer. 17:9, 23:25-32; Col. 2:18,19
    3. By trusting in the works of the law rather than the promise of Christ in the Word
      Gal. 3:2-6
  5. What must we do to walk in the Spirit?
    Gal. 5:25
    1. We must apply ourselves to the study of the Word on a daily basis, to gather the raw materials which the Spirit will apply to our lives
      Col. 3:16,17
    2. As we learn what the Word requires of us, we must not grieve the Spirit by failing to speak or act according to His Word
      Eph. 4:25-32
    3. We must earnestly desire prophecy—that is, the testimony of Jesus
      1 Cor. 14:1-5,39
    4. The test: if the Spirit bears witness to Christ, then we who claim to be filled with the Spirit must also bear witness to Christ, by word and deed

[…] I preached the first of two sermons leading up to Reformation Day today. It’s sort of a “we need a new Reformation, and it’s the same as the old Reformation” theme, but I wasn’t obvious about it, I don’t think. […]
