Pastor Rob Davis: Matt. 7:13,14

In Matthew 7:13-14 Jesus makes four distinct contrasts as He commands us to enter through the narrow gate:

  1. There are two gates.
    1. One is wide (v. 13b).
    2. One is narrow/small (v. 13a & 14a).
  2. There are two ways.
    1. One is broad (v. 13c).
    2. One is narrow (v. 14b).
  3. There are two destinations.
    1. One is destruction (v. 13d).
    2. One is life (v. 14c).
  4. There are two groups of people.
    1. One is large (v. 13e).
    2. One is small (v. 14d).

    2. Believing (vs. 9-11).
  2. Treat others as God treats you.
    1. Turn the tables (v. 12a).

October 14, 2007: Faith Alone

Charles Sebold: Faith Alone

  1. To be healed, one must first be shattered
    1. God is holy (Is. 6:1-4)
    2. God demands holiness (Is. 6:5)
    3. You are sinful (Ecc. 9:3b; Matt. 23:23; Is. 1:15; Ps. 51:4; Rev. 14:9-11, 20:14,15)
    4. You are incapable of rising above sin (Rom. 3:20)
    5. You must repent, but you cannot escape (Acts 17:30,31)
    6. Your judgment is certain and your sentence has already been passed (Heb. 10:26,27)
  2. Nobody who is rightfully condemned can save somebody else
    1. Adam sinned, therefore all who were in him sin (Rom. 5:12)
    2. No sinner, or group of sinners, can be of any benefit in making restitution for you (Rom. 5:7; Heb. 10:11)
    3. No ritual or ceremony makes things right before God (Heb. 10:1-4)
  3. Jesus Christ is your only hope
    1. God created Adam, but the Son “is begotten” by the Father; Christ is God, the same essence as the Father, utterly unique
    2. He lived a perfect life, to be what Adam could not be (Rom. 5:19)
    3. He died, not accidentally or against His will, but intentionally (John 10:17,18)
    4. His death on the cross has been declared by God as acceptable (Heb. 9:11-14; Rom. 5:9)
    5. Christ’s righteousness can be yours, and your sin can be His (2 Cor. 5:21)
    6. If you died with Him, you will rise as He did (Col. 2:9-14)
  4. Faith is the instrument of justification
    1. There will never be a time when you no longer need Christ’s righteousness
    2. The means that God has chosen to justify you is faith (John 5:24; 1 Cor. 15:1-4; John 8:24; Ps. 73:25,26; John 6:65; John 6:63; John 3:18)
    3. Only God’s grace justifies, and only through faith (Rom. 3:23-25)
  5. All who are justified are glorified (Rom. 8:30)
    1. We are declared holy and righteous—justification
    2. We are made holy—sanctification
    3. We will be perfectly holy—glorification (1 John 3:2)
    4. We, being in Christ, will give Him all the glory for what He has done
    5. We, being in Christ, will share all His glory

October 7, 2007: Matt. 7:1-6

7 10 2007

Pastor Rob Davis: Matt. 7:1-6

In Matthew 7:1-6, Jesus teaches us four truths about judging others.

  1. The penalty for judging wrongly is God’s judgment (vv. 1,2).
  2. The root cause of judging wrongly is hypocrisy (vv. 3,4).
  3. The antidote for judging wrongly is repentance (v. 5).
  4. The response to those judging the gospel wrongly is silence (v. 6).
