Pastor Rob Davis: Matt. 8:18-22

In Matthew 8:18-22, through the statements of 2 would-be disciples and Jesus’ responses to them, we are shown four qualifications for true discipleship.

  1. Discipleship requires complete commitment to Christ (vs. 18-19).
  2. Discipleship requires sacrificial commitment to Christ (v. 20).
  3. Discipleship requires unconditional commitment to Christ (v. 21).
  4. Discipleship requires urgent commitment to Christ (v. 22).

Pastor Rob Davis: Matt. 8:1-17

In Matthew 8:1-17 we are shown Jesus healing four outsiders by His word and we learn four thruths about salvation.

  1. Jesus heals a leper and we learn that salvation requires forgiveness and cleansing from sin (vv. 1-4).
  2. Jesus heals the centurion’s servant and we learn that salvation requires faith in Himself (vv. 5-13).
  3. Jesus heals Peter’s mother-in-law and we learn that salvation leads to serving Him (vv. 14, 15).
  4. Jesus heals many who were demon-possessed and we learn that salvation requires a sin-bearer (vv. 16, 17).

Pastor Rob Davis: Matt. 7:24-29

In Matthew 7:24-29 Jesus, the one with all authority (vv. 28, 29), describes the faith of two kinds of people.

  1. The wise person hears and acts upon (obeys) the words of Christ and their faith is shown to be real.
    1. Their trust is in Christ (v. 24).
    2. Their security is in Christ (v. 25).
  2. The foolish person hears and does not act upon (disobeys) the words of Christ and their faith is shown to be counterfeit.
    1. Their trust is in themselves (v. 26).
    2. Their security is in themselves (v. 27).

Pastor Rob Davis: Matt. 7:15-23

In Matthew 7:15-24 Jesus exhorts us to beware of 2 kinds of false people.

  1. Beware of false prophets.
    1. Their mission: deception (v. 15).
    2. Our mission: recognition (vv. 16-20).
  2. Beware of becoming a false professor.
    1. Many profess to know Christ but are not known by Christ (vv. 21a, 22, 23).
    2. Few are known by Christ and are obedient to God’s will (v. 21b).
