In Matthew 9:18-34 Jesus continues to present Himself as the Messiah as He performs four more miracles.

  1. Jesus heals Jairus’ daughter.
    1. Jairus makes his request (v. 18).
    2. Jesus and His disciples go (v. 19).
    3. Jesus dismisses the laughing mourners (vv. 23, 24).
    4. Jesus raises the dead child (v. 25).
    5. Jesus’ actions gain fame (v. 26).
  2. Jesus heals the hemorrhaging woman.
    1. The woman seeks and touches Jesus (vv. 20, 21).
    2. Jesus affirms the woman’s faith and confirms her healing (v. 22).
  3. Jesus heals two blind men.
    1. The men plead for mercy from Jesus (v. 27).
    2. Jesus tests their faith (v. 28).
    3. Jesus affirms their faith and heals them (vv. 29, 30a).
    4. Jesus commands and the men disobey (vv. 30b, 31).
  4. Jesus casts out a demon.
    1. The demon-possessed mute man is brought to Jesus (v. 32).
    2. Jesus casts out the demon and the mute man speaks (v. 33a).
    3. The crowds are amazed (v. 33b).
    4. The Pharisees scoff (v. 34).

In Matthew 9:18-34 we are shown seven traits of Jesus’ character as Healer as He performs four more miracles.

  1. Jesus is compassionate.
  2. Jesus is sacrificial.
  3. Jesus is available.
  4. Jesus is touchable.
  5. Jesus is impartial.
  6. Jesus is kind.
  7. Jesus is accepting.


December 23, 2007: Matt. 9:9-17

In Matthew 9:9-17 Jesus continues to claim His deity as He answers two questions.

  1. Jesus answers a questions about fellowship.
    1. Matthew is called into fellowship (v. 9).
    2. Jesus fellowships with the undesirables (v. 10).
    3. The self-righteous ones question Jesus’ righteousness (v. 11).
    4. Jesus challenges the self-righteous ones.
      1. Do the sick not need a physician (v. 12)?
      2. Compassion is more important than sacrifice (v. 13a).
      3. I came to compassionately call sinners, not the righteous (v. 13b).
  2. Jesus answers a question about fasting.
    1. John’s disciples question Jesus’ ways (v. 14).
    2. Jesus corrects their thinking.
      1. Joy now, fasting later (v. 15).
      2. The gospel is completely new (vv. 16, 17).

In Matthew 8:23-9:8 we are shown Jesus acting with power and authority as He reveals His divinity through three miracles.

  1. Jesus calms the storm.
    1. The disciples follow (v. 23).
    2. The storm falls (v. 24).
    3. The disciples falter (v. 25).
    4. The Messiah rebukes (v. 26).
    5. The disciples fear (v. 27).
  2. Jesus casts out demons.
    1. The demoniacs come (v. 28).
    2. The demons complain (v. 29-31).
    3. The Messiah commands (v. 32).
    4. The herdsman claim (v. 33).
    5. The city criticizes (v. 34).
  3. Jesus forgives sins.
    1. Jesus returns home (v. 9:1).
    2. The men have faith (v. 2a).
    3. Jesus forgives sins (v. 2b).
    4. The scribes are furious (v. 3).
    5. Jesus challenges the scribes (v. 4-5).
    6. Jesus heals the paralytic (v. 6-7).
