Pastor Rob Davis: Matt. 10:1-15

In Matthew 10:1-15 Jesus commissions the 12 disciples to go forth in ministry by giving instructions dealing with 7 specific areas.

Jesus’ commission deals with:

1. Specific men (vs. 1-4).
2. A specific place (vs. 5-6).
3. A specific message to be preached (v. 7).
4. Specific works to be done (v. 8).
5. A specific way to trust God for their provision (vs. 9-10).
6. A specific base for missionary operations (vs. 11-13).
7. A specific response to rejection (v. 14-15)

Charles Sebold: The Supremacy of Christ in Our Life

Colossians 2:1-3:5

1. The lordship of Christ controls what we know and understand (2:1-8)
1. All treasures of knowledge and wisdom are hidden in Christ
2. Christ is Lord over the knowledge and wisdom of this world
1. Our faith in Christ must include discipline and stability
2. If we have received Christ Jesus as Lord, we must walk in Him
1. We walk in deep-rooted faith
2. We walk with overflowing gratitude
2. The deity of Christ makes our freedom from sin possible (2:9,10)
1. God fills Christ, although He is a man
2. We are filled in Christ
3. God is supreme over every ruler and authority (e.g., sin, philosophies)
3. The death of Christ removes the “body of the flesh” (2:11,12)
1. Circumcision of God = removal of the sin nature that controls us
2. We are raised up with Him
4. The cross of Christ destroys the sin debt we owe to the Law (2:13-15)
1. While we were dead, God made us alive together with Christ
2. There was a “certificate of debt”
3. The certificate was canceled, destroyed, abolished
4. Thus Christ demonstrated His lordship over rulers/authorities (sin, human wisdom)
5. The substance of Christ gives us His heavenly perspective (2:16-3:2)
1. No authority may reinstate our debt
2. The substance, the body, the reality, is Christ!
1. We are not to be submitted to the decrees that put us back into debt to sin — arbitrary sacred/profane divisions — everything is sacred now
2. Things in the world will perish, how are they important to our holiness?
3. If we are raised with Christ, our eyes are on Him, on things that surround Him
1. We wrestle with holiness in spiritual ways
2. We do not wrestle with holiness in fleshly ways
6. The resurrection of Christ gives us His life in place of our own (3:3)
7. The return of Christ gives us a share in His glory (3:4)
8. Therefore: you are dead to sin (3:5)

• Christ is Lord; do not submit to the thinking of the world
• Our faith is in God-in-Christ and the fullness of His deity, not in our being good
• Our sinful nature and its authority over us died with Christ
• We are free from debt, and free from those who would enslave us again, because of the cross
• To see things from a human perspective is to accept another authority in our lives
• We may be dead to sin and alive in Christ, but we must believe God’s promise that this is true
• We look forward to the day when the truth — that we are holy in Christ — is revealed

Pastor Rob Davis: Rom. 8:1-13

As we conclude our sermon series on personal revival, we consider the basis for living the Spirit-filled life.

According to Romans 8:1-13, because of Christ’s finished work on the cross, believers live in the power of the Holy Spirit, and their lives contain four distinguishing marks:

1. A great proclamation: No Condemnation (v. 1)
2. A great freedom (v. 2):
1. On what grounds? Christ condemned sin (v. 3)
2. For what purpose? Believers walking according to the Spirit (v. 4)
3. A great distinction:
1. A mind set on the flesh leading to death (vv. 5a, 6a, 7-9b)
   vs:
2. A mind set on the Spirit leading to life (vv. 5b, 6b, 9a, 10, 11)
4. A great mortification of sin (vv. 12, 13).

In the story of the destruction of Sodom & Gomorrah (Genesis 19) we will find 16 truths concerning sexual immorality and its effects.

1. Compromise leads to entanglement (vv. 1-3).
2. Sexual immorality is caught & taught (vv. 4-5).
3. Sexual sin results in irrational behavior (vv. 6-8).
4. We must shut the door on destruction (vv. 9-10)
5. Sexual sin results in (more) irrational behavior (v. 7).
6. God judges sexual immorality (vv. 12-13).
7. Our involvement in sexual immorality causes us to “cry wolf” (v. 14)
8. A believer’s constant pursuing of sexual immorality abuses God’s grace (vv. 15-16).
9. Sexual immorality causes our view of reality to be warped (vv. 17-20).
10. God is both Deliverer and Destroyer with regard to sexual immorality (vv. 21-25).
11. After being delivered from sexual immorality do not longingly look back (vv. 26).
12. Believers are spared from judgment for sexual immorality because of Christ’s faithfulness (vv. 27-29).
13. There is strength in the body of Christ to fight sexual immorality (v. 30).
14. Sexual immorality has generational effects (vv. 31-36).
15. You can remove yourself from Sodom but Sodom is still in your heart (vv. 31-36).
16. Sexual immorality has devastating consequences (v. 37-38).

Pastor Rob Davis: Forgiveness

As we continue to ask God for personal revival we must consider and apply two truths about forgiveness if we are to have clear consciences before God and men.

1. God forgives us.
1. For salvation.
1. Only God can forgive sins.
2. Sins are forgiven through the sacrifice of Christ.
3. Having our sins forgiven requires repentance.
2. For restoration.
2. We must forgive others.
1. As God has forgiven us.
2. For restoration.
