Pastor Rob Davis: Eph. 5:3-14

In Ephesians 5:3-21 Paul contrasts the behavior of those who are darkness with the behavior of those who are light by describing three facets of each.

1. Paul describes those who are darkness:
   1. Their conduct:
      1. Immoral acts (v. 3).
      2. Immoral speech (v. 4a-c).
   2. Their character (vv. 5a, b, 8a).
   3. Their condemnation:
      1. No inheritance (5c).
      2. God’s wrath (vv. 6-7).
2. Paul describes those who are light:
   1. Their fruit:
      1. Goodness (v. 9a).
      2. Righteousness (v. 9b).
      3. Truth (v. 9c).
      4. Thanksgiving (v. 4d).
   2. Their tasks:
      1. Please God (v. 10).
      2. Expose evil (v. 11).
      3. Illuminate darkness (vv. 12-14).
   3. Their walk:
      1. Wise (v. 15):
         1. Redeeming the time (v. 16).
         2. Understanding God’s will (v. 17).
      2. Spirit-filled (v. 18):
         1. Worshiping:
            1. Speaking (v. 19a).
            2. Singing (v. 19b).
            3. Making music (v. 19c).
         2. Giving thanks (v. 20).
         3. Submitting (v. 21).
