Pastor Rob Davis: Matt. 20:17-19

In Matthew 20:17-19 makes His third passion prediction and informs the disciples of three aspects of the suffering He is about to endure.

1. Jesus’ sufferings will occur in a particular place (vv. 17-18a).
2. Jesus’ sufferings will follow a particular pattern (vv. 18b-19a).
3. Jesus’ sufferings will result in a particular product (v. 19b).

This was an unusual recording, in that the sermon was preached in three parts, each surrounded by singing, prayer, and Scripture reading. The Lord’s Supper was also observed during the recording. The quality suffers a bit because I wasn’t prepared with a microphone to catch the readers, and for copyright reasons I edited out the singing.

Pastor Rob Davis: Matt. 19:27-20:16

In Matthew 19:27-20:16 we are shown God’s generosity in the grace he shows to those who are in the Kingdom of Heaven as Jesus teaches the disciples three truths about rewards.

1. God’s generosity in grace is revealed in His reward to the 12 disciples (19:27,28).
2. God’s generosity in grace is revealed in His reward to all believers (19:29).
3. God’s generosity in grace is revealed in His warning against selfish motives when receiving His rewards.
   1. The point stated: Many who are first will be last and the last first (19:30).
      1. The parable presented—Part I: Workers hired from first to last (20:1-7).
      2. The parable presented—Part II: Workers paid from last to first (20:8-12).
      3. The parable presented—Part III: The character of the landowner revealed to be:
         1. Just (20:13, 15a).
         2. Generous (20:14, 15b).
   2. The point re-stated, reversed in light of the parable: The last shall be first and the first last.

Pastor Rob Davis: Matt. 19:16-26

In Matthew 19:16-26 Jesus teaches four important facts concerning eternal life as He interacts with questions from a rich young ruler and teaches His disciples.

1. Eternal life requires obedience to what the Good One requires (vv. 16-19).
2. Eternal life requires an idolectomy (vv. 20-22).
3. Eternal life is impossible for the rich to attain (vv. 23-25).
4. Eternal life is only attainable by God’s grace and power (v. 26).

Pastor Rob Davis: Matt. 19:13-15

In Matthew 19:13-15, as Jesus teaches about entrance into His kingdom, we find three wise principles concerning the spiritual training of children.

1. Wise parents (and churches) bring their children to Jesus (v. 13a).
2. Wise churches (and parents) don’t undervalue children, especially since they model for us the dependence needed to enter the kingdom (vv. 13b-14).
3. Wise churches (and parents) pray for and bless children (v. 15).
