  2. Paul appeals to God in prayer for Him to preserve believers.
    1. Completely (v. 23b).
    2. Without Blame (v. 23c).
  3. Paul appeals to the congregation for them to trust in God’s faithfulness (v. 24).
  4. Paul appeals to the congregation for prayer on his behalf (v. 25).
  5. Paul appeals to the congregation for them to greet each other on his behalf (v. 26).
  6. Paul appeals to the congregation for this letter to be read to the body (v. 27).
  7. Paul appeals to Jesus for His grace to be upon the congregation (v. 28).

  2. Believers should esteem their elders.

    3. Because of their work (v. 13c).
  3. Believers should live in peace with their elders (v. 13d).

  1. Our salvation is destined by God (v. 9a).
  2. Our salvation is obtained through the death of our Lord Jesus Christ (v. 9b-10a).
  3. Our salvation leads to eternal life (v. 10b).
  4. Our salvation should lead to us encouraging one another (v. 11a).
  5. Our salvation should lead to us building up one another (v. 11b).

In 1 Thessalonians 5:1-8 Paul shows us differences between the sons of the night and the sons of the day.

  1. The sons of the night will be surprised by the Day of the Lord.
    1. It will come like a thief in the night (v. 2b).
    2. It will come with destruction (v. 3a).
    3. It will come suddenly (v. 3b).
    4. It will come like labor pains (v. 3c).
  2. The sons of the night act in darkness.
    1. By sleeping (v. 6a, 7a).
    2. By getting drunk (v. 7b).
  3. The sons of the day will not be surprised by the Day of the Lord (v. 1, 2a, 4).
  4. The sons of the day act in light.
    1. By being alert (v. 6b).
    2. By being sober (v. 6c, 8a).
      1. Wearing the breastplate of faith & love (v. 8b).
      2. Wearing the helmet of salvation (v. 8c).

In 1 Thessalonians 4:15-18 Paul gives believers 2 reasons to be comforted in the face of death.

Believers should be comforted (v. 18) because:

  1. The dead will not miss Christ’s coming (v. 15).
    1. The Lord will descend.
      1. From heaven (v. 16a)
      2. with a shout (v. 16b)
      3. with the voice of an archangel (v. 16c)
      4. with the trumpet of God (v. 16d)
    2. The dead in Christ will rise first (v. 16e).
    3. The living will be caught up (v. 17a).
      1. together with the dead (v. 17b)
      2. in the clouds (v. 17c)
      3. to meet the Lord (v. 17d)
      4. in the air (v. 17e)
  2. We will always be with the Lord (v. 17f).

In 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14, Paul gives three actions that we are to take in light of a believer’s death.

In light of a believer’s death we are to:

  1. Be Informed (v. 13a, b).
  2. Be Different.
    1. From those who grieve (v. 13 c).
    2. From those who have no hope (v. 13 d).
  3. Be Hopeful.
    1. Because Jesus died and rose again (v. 14 a).
    2. Because God will raise believers who die (v. 14 b).

In 1 Thessalonians 4:9-12, Paul urges believers to develop four habits that will enable their lives to be a proper witness to non-believers (v. 12).

Believers should develop the habit of:

  1. Increasing in love for the brethren.
    1. A love that is taught by God (v. 9).
    2. A love that is practiced widely (v. 10).
  2. Leading a quiet life (v. 11a).
  3. Minding their own business (v. 11b).
  4. Working for an honest wage (v. 11c).
